Road Roller Lubricant Selection Standards
Road rollers run continuously under heavy shock loads, constant vibration, dusty construction sites and dramatic temperature changes. Engine oil, gear oil and grease are responsible for reducing friction, carrying away heat, preventing wear and sealing out contaminants. Wrong lubricant selection leads to gear pitting, bearing seizure, engine overheating, frequent breakdowns and high maintenance costs. Below are professional standards for choosing lubricants for vibratory compactors.
1. Follow OEM Specifications First
The operation manual is the primary standard. Always check the required performance level, viscosity grade and approval list before purchase.
- Do not mix lubricants of different brands, base oil types or additive packages
- Improper lubricant use may void your machine warranty
- For 12t, 14t, 16t, 18t, 20t and 26t single / double drum rollers, confirm the configuration of engine, drive axle, vibration gearbox and articulation joints separately
2. Engine Oil Selection
Road roller diesel engines face heavy intermittent load, climbing and frequent start-stop cycles.
- Performance level: API CK-4 / CI-4 for most modern diesel engines; match Tier 3 / Tier 4 / Euro emission requirements
- Viscosity grade:
- SAE 15W-40: All-season universal for temperate zones, the most widely used
- SAE 10W-40 / 10W-30: Cold climate, easier cold start
- SAE 20W-50: High-temperature, tropical and long-hour heavy-duty working
- Key requirements: High oxidation stability, soot dispersion, anti-wear and anti-corrosion, good thermal stability under sustained heavy load
3. Gear Oil for Drive Axle & Vibration Gearbox
The drive axle and vibratory gearbox bear extreme impact torque, which is the highest-risk lubrication point on a road roller. Select extreme pressure (EP) gear oil.
- Grade: SAE 80W-90 GL-5 standard for general use; SAE 75W-140 GL-5 for heavy tonnage rollers and cold regions
- Core indicators: Excellent EP & anti-scuffing performance, shear stability, anti-rust and water resistance
- Note: Vibration gearboxes inside the drum have continuous cyclic shock loads; never use ordinary gear oil without EP additives
4. Grease for Bearings, Hinges and Pivot Points
Articulation joints, drum bearings, steering pivots and vibration bearings are exposed to dust, splash water and continuous vibration.
- Standard grade: NLGI No.2 lithium complex EP grease (most common for all seasons)
- Cold area: NLGI No.1 or NLGI No.0 for centralized automatic lubrication systems
- Key features: Anti-washout, high dropping point, solid EP additive, good adhesion under vibration
- Avoid soft grease that throws off easily or hard grease that blocks lubrication lines
5. Viscosity Matching & Temperature Adaptability
Viscosity is the core index to form stable oil film.
- Too thin: Oil film breaks under shock load, rapid metal wear
- Too thick: High flow resistance, power loss, slow lubrication supply at low temperature
- High viscosity index lubricants are preferred for regions with large day-night temperature differences
6. Anti-Wear, Anti-Oxidation & Contamination Resistance
Construction sites are full of dust, sand and rainwater.
- Anti-oxidation: Slow oil deterioration, reduce sludge and carbon deposit
- Demulsibility: Quickly separate mixed water to avoid emulsion and corrosion
- Anti-foam property: Prevent air entrainment caused by vibration
- Keep lubricants clean during filling; filter and sampling inspection are necessary for long service cycles
7. Seal & Material Compatibility
Check compatibility with rubber seals, hoses and painted surfaces (NBR, FKM). Incompatible lubricants will harden, swell or erode seals, resulting in oil leakage. Leakage is one of the most frequent faults on road rollers.
Quick Lubricant Selection Checklist for Road Rollers
✅ Prioritize OEM recommended grade and approval standard ✅ Engine oil: API CK-4 / CI-4, SAE viscosity matched with local climate ✅ Drive axle & vibratory gearbox: GL-5 EP gear oil ✅ Pivots and bearings: NLGI 2 EP lithium complex grease ✅ High oxidation stability, anti-rust, water resistance and shear stability ✅ Compatible with seals and hydraulic components ✅ Strictly avoid mixing different types of lubricants ✅ Control cleanliness and follow scheduled lubrication cycles
