Road rollers work under heavy shock loads, variable ambient temperatures, dusty construction sites and continuous vibration. The hydraulic oil directly determines the responsiveness, compaction stability and service life of pumps, motors, valves and cylinders. Choosing improper hydraulic oil causes internal wear, pressure loss, overheating, seal failure and costly downtime. Below are the official selection standards for road roller hydraulic systems.
1. ISO Viscosity Grade & Viscosity Index (Core Standard)
Viscosity is the first factor to evaluate. Road roller hydraulic oil follows the ISO VG classification measured at 40°C.
- ISO VG 32: For cold regions, winter operation, easy cold start, fast oil circulation
- ISO VG 46: Universal grade for most temperate climates, the most widely used for 12–16 ton single drum and double drum rollers
- ISO VG 68: For high-temperature, tropical environments, long-hour heavy compaction work
A high Viscosity Index (VI ≥95) keeps viscosity stable when temperature swings. Avoid oil that turns too thin under heat or too thick in cold weather. Too thin oil loses lubricating film; too thick oil increases power consumption and slow response.
2. Anti-Wear & Load-Bearing Performance
Road roller hydraulic systems often run under peak pressure and impact loads. Select anti-wear hydraulic oil (HM / HLP) with reliable AW additive packages. It must pass vane pump wear tests and provide strong protection for piston pumps and orbit motors. For high-pressure heavy-duty rollers, choose upgraded HVLP grade with better shear stability to prevent viscosity drop after long vibration cycles.
3. Oxidation Stability & Anti-Corrosion Performance
Construction machines run nonstop for hours. Good oxidation resistance slows oil ageing, reduces sludge and varnish buildup inside valves. Qualified hydraulic oil includes anti-rust and anti-corrosion additives to protect steel, copper and alloy components against moisture from rain and humid job sites.
4. Antifoam & Demulsibility
Continuous vibration in roller hydraulic circuits easily traps air and forms foam. Foam leads to spongy control, unstable compaction force and cavitation damage. Demulsibility ensures quick separation of mixed water. Water-contaminated oil accelerates wear and corrosion.
5. Seal & Material Compatibility
Check compatibility with NBR, FKM and EPDM seals, hoses and painted surfaces. Incompatible oil causes seal swelling, hardening and oil leakage, which is a frequent failure on compactors. Never randomly mix different types or brands of hydraulic oil.
6. Follow OEM Manufacturer Specifications First
All above standards are supplementary. Always prioritize the hydraulic oil grade, performance level and approval requirements listed in your road roller operation manual. 7. Cleanliness Standard
